Ohio Mom Pleads Guilty to Murder After Leaving Toddler Alone for 10 Days to Go on Caribbean Vacation.
In a heartbreaking case that has shocked the nation, Kristel Candelario, a 32-year-old mother from Ohio, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in connection with the death of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn Candelario. The toddler was left alone and unattended for 10 days while Candelario went on a vacation to Detroit, Michigan, and Puerto Rico.
According to authorities, Jailyn was found unresponsive in her Cleveland home on June 16, 2023, after Candelario returned from her vacation. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, with investigations revealing she was extremely dehydrated. Prosecutors stated that Jailyn was discovered in a Pack-N-Play pen surrounded by urine, feces, and soiled blankets.
Candelario entered guilty pleas for one count of aggravated murder and one count of endangering children, while being acquitted of two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault. The case drew widespread attention, leading to Candelario's termination from her position as a building substitute at Cleveland elementary school Citizens Academy Glenville.
Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley described the case as "truly unimaginable" and emphasized the role of prosecutors in seeking justice for Jailyn. He stated, "This conviction today is the first step towards justice for Jailyn."
